The phrase “you can’t see the wood for the trees”  seems especially fitting for the marquetry table top I used in the Lego series. Its intricate detail, covering the whole surface, made it visually overwhelming.

By burning away a lot of the background to reveal an iconic modern shape it plays to many different references. The destruction of the old, to make way for the new is one. However, the iconic shape, being of simple line and form, serves to accentuate the intense detail of the marquetry, bringing attention to a skill and artistry that is no longer overwhelming and works in a modern context.

The development of the silhouette using actual Lego pieces adds a playful nature to the work whilst reminding me of my very first creations using Lego.

The plastic opposes the wood, yet the “giant” mini figure silhouette is an amalgamation of the two, becoming a bridge between the past and the present, honoring tradition while embracing modernity.

Oh To Be
An Angel

“Reflecting on times past, where beauty was undeniable and authority unchallenged—but in the 21st century does that render me obsolete? Perhaps all I need is a fresh set of dazzling wings to soar anew!”

I’m Just
Misunderstood

“Everyone wears black these days, besides there’s nothing wrong with a little bit of devilment!”

Balloon Seller

“In my mind’s eye, the balloon seller has always been an old man. I’ve often wondered whether he stands there rejoicing in the smiles on children’s faces whilst reliving his own childhood, or whether he’s just cynically counting his profits.”

Who Popped
My Balloon?

“Is this a metaphor for the old man’s life, slowly deflating until its energy is spent, or is it simply another instance of a world in which life and loves can be fleeting, wants and desires temporary.”

Spreading
The Love

“Whats not to love, cherubs and Lego, it’s a match made in heaven. Old and new can work together for the greater good.”

Plastic
At Heart

“The marquetry minifigure got a heart transplant and he feels young again.”

Quick Draw
(do you feel lucky?)

“Ironically the original marquetry piece was made in the era of the cowboy. Now the tools of his trade come from the world he’s alienated from.”

Quick Draw Righty

“Not every cowboy is ambidextrous.”

Quick Draw Lefty

“Some cowboys use the other side of their brain.”
